Founded in 2026, the Sam Haywood Composition Competition brings high-calibre contemporary classical music to Australia while supporting the next generation of composers. Inspired by Sydney as a cultural crossroads, the competition reflects the city’s blend of classical tradition, contemporary music, and diverse cultural voices.

The competition features two performance categories, with winning works presented live during Sam Haywood’s Australian tour.

Key Dates:

  • Application Deadline: 19 July 2026, 11:59pm AEST

  • Results Announcement: 1 August 2026

  • Concert Performances: Late September – Mid October 2026

Competition Categories & Prizes:

Category 1: Solo Piano

  • Live performance by Sam Haywood during the Australian tour

  • Professional studio recording by Sam Haywood

Category 2: String Quartet

  • Live performance by Efrata Strings during the Sam Haywood Australian tour 2026

    • Applicants must be under 30 years old

    • Applicants must be living, studying, or working in Australia

    • Maximum two submissions per category

    • Works must be original, unperformed, and unpublished

    • Maximum duration: 6 minutes

    • Single-movement works only

    • No electro-acoustic elements or prepared piano

    • Scores must be professionally formatted

    • Winners are strongly encouraged to attend workshops

    • Application fees:

      • $45 AUD (single submission)

      • $35 AUD per entry (multiple submissions)

    • All application fees are non-refundable.

    • Category 1: Solo Piano

    • Category 2: String Quartet (2 Violins, Viola, Cello)

  • Applicants must submit:

    • Personal details

    • PDF score (fully notated)

    • MP3 audio recording (live or MIDI realisation)

    Submissions do not need to be anonymous. No individual feedback will be provided except to shortlisted finalists.
